About
Thank you, 2020 Rivers Alive volunteers! We had an incredibly successful year with 158 volunteers cleaning up 20 different sites around Athens, collecting 2.62 tons (5,250 pounds) of trash and recycling, 840 pounds of metal, 4.23 tons of leaf and limb, and 71 tires from our waterways and natural areas. In addition, 8 families/groups organized their own independent clean-ups during the month of October. We hope to see you all again next year!
Rivers Alive is Georgia's annual volunteer river clean-up event that encourages civic involvement in the preservation of Georgia's precious water resources. Our waterways provide us with fresh drinking water, important wildlife habitat, and recreational opportunities that serve as a respite from our busy day-to-day lives. In 2019, 325 volunteers came out to collect 4.5 tons of trash, 9,320 pounds of metal, and 244 tires during the event!
Rivers Alive is organized locally by Keep Athens-Clarke County Beautiful, ACC Solid Waste, ACC Transportation and Public Works/Stormwater Division, ACC Leisure Services, ACC Public Utilities/Water Conservation Office, Athens Land Trust, the Upper Oconee Watershed Network, the Oconee Rivers Land Trust, Keep Oconee County Beautiful Commission, ACC Central Services/Office of Sustainability, and UGA's Office of Service Learning.
