(Fall 2024) Service Learning - HDFS 3453 Parent & Family Dynamics with Donia Timby

Today for "move it monday" we did NFL drills. We raced to see who had the fastest time for two of the drills. My times were really slow but it was good exercise! The other drill was to run and catch a football. It got really competitive and we had fun with it. We also played a game to see who could jump and stick a sticky note on the wall the highest. I was surprised that the kids were able to reach higher than me considering I am much taller. Overall it was a fun day!

This week for "Move it Monday" we played a really fun game of Hungry Hungry Hippos. Everyone was paired into two groups. I got paired with Margaret and we won! The goal was to wheel barrow your partner to the middle to collect bean bags and whoever brought back the most wins! It was super fun and we had a good time. After, we played four square, the kids are always coming up with new rules and you have to be a fast learner to keep up with them! We then winded down for the day in the computer lab.

This week's "Move it Monday" required a lot of exercise but was super fun! We played soccer with a twist. There were 3 groups of two and when each group was called they had to battle it out to see who could score first! The kids were much better than me, I lost every time but still had fun! We ended our day in the computer lab and played the New York Times Games together!

This week we worked out for "Move it Monday". We had two dice to roll. One gave us the work out, and one gave us the number of reps or amount of time we had to do each one for. Surprisingly, the kids favorite was burpees! However we all really struggled with the push ups! I did my best to encourage everyone and motivate them to keep going. We had a little bit of free time after to play four square which is always a favorite amongst the kids!

This week we played a really fun and exciting game! We were broken up into three groups, I was with Zariah and Montana! The goal of the game was to get as many points as possible by throwing a pool noodle through a hula hoop. There were 3 different distances with different point values. I kept missing the hula hoop but was encouraged by my team to keep trying! We didn't win but we had a good time! We then played in the computer lab to wind down for the day!

For this week's gym time we played a big game of tic-tac-toe. We were broken up into two groups. Each team had different color bean bags that they could place in hula hoops to try and win. We had to race the other team down the gym to place our bean bags. My team won! We then had extra time to play four square. I love playing because it has been a good way for me to bond with the kids. We then went to the computer lab and all played fun games!

This was my first week volunteering at the YRCC. I was introduced to the kids which seemed intimidating at first but they were all very welcoming. We had snack time first and we got the chance to talk and laugh. We then played an activity where everyone had to make up their own move when the ball was thrown to them. I picked bunny hops for mine! We also played another game that involved getting a ball through a hula hoop for points. There were different point levels and even some moving hula hoops! The game focused on critical thinking skills. Those that went for the easier, less point value hula hoops got more points than those going for the moving, higher point value hula hoops. We ended our day in the computer lab to settle down. Overall it was a really good first day and made me excited for the rest of the semester!
