All my hours for peer mentor from Alli!!!
Volunteering today at the Jones Center brought joy and sadness with it being my last day of service learning. I helped specifically in the ice skating rink helping children find the right skate size for them so that they could learn how to skate with their instructor. By now they knew where their instructor was, but some forgot so we helped walk them over to their instructor. It was engaging to watch the children learn to work with their communication skills when asking for their skates. At the end of the night the children returned their skates, we cleaned them, and then returned them back to their rightful home.
I had so much fun volunteering and working with children at the ice skating rink. We communicate and work with the children by finding the right skate size for them and showing them where their instructors are. Then by the end of the night, we clean every skate and return them to the right home. The children are learning how to ice skate and the parents have them learn their communication skills by interacting with us and becoming independent.
Volunteering at the March 14th St. Patrick's Day Keg and Curling was fun. When I arrived, I helped set up the rules and kegs on the ice, preparing it for the players. I also decorated the tables and laid out the drinks. Once the place was set up and ready to start, I helped people purchase their tickets, put wristbands on, and check IDs to ensure they were 21. Once people stopped checking in, I helped serve the soda and watch people play Keg Curling.
I had so much fun volunteering at the Jones Center ice skating ring! Today the ice skaters started to get a hang of things since it was their second week. However, some children missed the first day yesterday, so after communicating with the children and helping them pick out their skates. I would walk some of the children to their ice skating instructor, showing them where to meet their instructor every day. Parents are teaching their children to communicate with the volunteers, which is a lot of fun working with children asking me for help instead of having their parents. Finally, after the ice skating lessons has ended children will bring their ice skates back up to me wehre I would clean them and return them back into their proper home.
had a great time volunteering at the Jones Center. Today they restarted their ice skating classes. Therefore, I got to see a bunch of new faces and a couple of old ones. However, since it was mostly new faces, once we gave the children their skates we had to guide them to their instructor because most of them had no clue where to go. Also, since most of them were new, we worked on patience because the little children were just figuring out their skate sizes. Which was honestly a lot of fun to help them figure that out. Near the end, they begin to drop off their skates for us to clean and return to their cubby.
Had a great time volunteering at the Jones Center and helping with the Central Stage Comedy Series (My Funny Valentine). First I helped set up and escort guest to their seats for the comedy show. Once the show started I had straight to the daycare. During the comedy, the couples would bring their children and drop them off at the daycare for us to play with and supervise as the parents watched a relaxing comedy show. While at the daycare, we first started in the gym playing fun active games for the children to run off their energy. We played duck-duck-goose, heart freeze tag, and a 2 team game. during the two-team game, I was the captain of one of the teams and in the end, we won. Soon after the gym games we went back to the daycare room to have snacks, a movie, and crafts. However, during that, I went back to the comedy show and escorted and helped the couples/parents from their seats to the lobby of the Jones Center and got ready for the second showing. While the second showing started back up I again then escorted the guest to their seats. I learned how to balance working with children and adults, time management, and keeping children to behave.
Today my group and I worked with young children learning how to skate. After checking in with each kid we helped make sure the little children got the correct shoe-size shakes and then led them to their instructors. By the end of the lessons, the young children would return with their skates. We cleaned them and put the ice skates back into their proper homes. After cleaning we were put in charge of closing up the ice skating check-in center and locking up the room with the ice skates. I was also put in charge of a side project of creating a Valentine box for the comedy valentines show that is on Friday. I had to design a Valentine's box and come up with relationship questions for people to pull out of the box.
I got to help at the Jones Community Center today from 5:30 pm-7 pm on Wednesday. As the children began to arrive I checked each child into the computer. However, I mainly focused on helping kids find the right ice stakes they needed. And if they needed help knowing what side of the ring they needed to be for their skating teacher. If they did, then I would walk them over to that side of the ice-staking ring and introduce them to their instructor. After the session, the children would return their ice stakes to use and we cleaned every stake and returned them to the right cubby. I Had tons of fun helping these little kids learn how to skate!
