    Food Pantry Volunteers Needed Weekly

Volunteering at the food pantry was a meaningful experience that allowed me to directly support members of the community facing food insecurity. During my shift, I moved boxes of produce and essential items from the loading area to the food box assembly line and helped pack approximately 80 food boxes for individuals and families in need. It was rewarding to see how teamwork and organization made it possible to prepare such a large number of boxes efficiently. This experience reminded me that even simple tasks, such as lifting, organizing, and packing food, can make a significant difference in someone’s life. I left with a greater appreciation for the importance of community service and the impact that volunteers have in helping ensure that everyone has access to basic necessities.

    Clinic Volunteering

During my clinic volunteer experience, I helped organize a patient backlog of four years. This task required patience, attention to detail, and careful organization to ensure that the records were properly arranged and easier for staff to access. The experience showed me how accurate record management supports efficient clinic operations, protects patient confidentiality, and contributes to continuity of care. Although the work was time-consuming, it was rewarding to help reduce a significant administrative burden for the clinic. I also gained a greater appreciation for the important behind-the-scenes responsibilities that allow healthcare professionals to serve patients effectively.

Participating in this Yaya Por Vida outreach was another meaningful and eye-opening experience. This time, we distributed resources to people outside and around Camillus House near 17th Street and 7th Court. The supplies included free condoms, Narcan, fentanyl test strips, Opill over-the-counter birth control, tampons, bottled water, personal-hygiene supplies such as moist towelettes, adhesive bandages, antibiotic ointment, cold compresses, and clean straight and round pipes with screens. The cold compresses and water were especially important for helping unhoused individuals cope with the extreme heat and reduce their risk of heat exhaustion or heatstroke. We also shared educational materials, including a zine about reporting ICE activity created by Megan Piontkowski, “Know Your Rights” cards courtesy of the Florida Immigrant Coalition, and other health and community information.

Beyond distributing supplies, I helped spread awareness about Narcan, fentanyl, overdose prevention, and the purpose of the harm-reduction materials. As with the previous event, I noticed that some people did not fully understand what Narcan was, how it could reverse an opioid overdose, or why fentanyl test strips are important. Being able to explain these resources showed me how important direct community education is. Providing supplies can address an immediate need, but explaining how and why they are used can help people make safer and more informed decisions.

This experience also showed me the importance of meeting people where they are without judgment. Access to clean supplies, reproductive-health products, menstrual and personal-hygiene items, basic wound-care materials, water, cooling supplies, overdose-prevention resources, and accurate information can reduce preventable harm while showing individuals that their health and dignity matter. The outreach reinforced that harm reduction is not about encouraging substance use; it is about recognizing existing realities and providing practical resources that may prevent infections, overdoses, heat-related illnesses, and other serious health consequences.

As a pre-nursing student, this experience strengthened my commitment to health equity, public-health education, and compassionate, trauma-informed care. It reminded me that meaningful healthcare often happens outside hospitals and clinics through respectful conversations, community outreach, and access to basic resources. I am grateful to Yaya Por Vida for allowing me to participate in an effort that supported the health, safety, dignity, and well-being of people in the community.
