I chose to volunteer for the Woodpecker Cavity Cam project at Zooniverse.org
In this project, I watched numerous videos and helped identify the wildlife found in them. In this project, I participated in the "Woodpecker Days and Nights workflow." In these videos, I identified whether the woodpecker(s) were nestlings, juveniles, or adults. Then, I identified the actions these woodpecker(s) were partaking in. Then, I described the different color bands that were wrapped around each woodpecker's leg. This was by far the hardest part because I had to pay close attention to detail to: whether or not all of the colored bands were visible and what color each band was (many colors were faded or hard to see in direct sunlight). I truly enjoyed participating in this project. Not only was it interesting to see how red-headed woodpeckers interact with each other and with their offspring, but it is nice to know that spending some of my time goes a long way in helping researchers classify all of the information that they bring in with these videos.
