Skills and Personal Development:
Without realizing it, I was "marketing" to people the products I was told to offer to them as they left (trunk liners, bags, and boxes for their plants). This is something I am becoming more aware of myself: I like to promote or market products and represent the organization or brand to my best ability. Customer service positions have their challenges but it does make a whole lot of difference when there is a strong, positive voice that acknowledges the customer on their way out. I was not considering staying in the hospitality industry, however, today changed my mind about that.
Understanding and Awareness:
I have a greater appreciation for those who sew seeds, plant, and garden overall. The earth is beautiful; it is the very image of life and it is important to take care of what we were given. There are all sorts of sizes, kinds, and colors of plants. Some people bought very large potted plants with deep roots and heightened stems, while others purchased a succulent contained within the palm of their hand. I don't know if this is scientifically correct but I think the taste a person has in a plant can reflect that person.
Relationships and Teamwork:
When I arrived, there was a shift change (morning to afternoon), so for a little bit I was by myself. It wasn't horrible or anything but I do thrive when I am with other people. About an hour later, another girl came and joined me as a volunteer. This made me really happy. Turns out, she and I had been at the same volunteering event the Botanic Garden had which struck a common similarity for further conversation. In short, she and I walked around the garden after our shift and had a great time wandering around, taking pictures, smelling flowers, and complaining about our feet hurting by the end. She and I are volunteering at the same event next Saturday as well so we'll see each other again shortly.
Organizational Impact and Alignment:
I do plan on volunteering for the Botanic Garden again. It's a detail-oriented, beautiful, passion filled organization. Everyone that works on the grounds easily displays their love for what they do and what they are representing.
Reflection and Improvement:
There were several bugs that tried and attacked us; I did get bit quite a few times. There wasn't really anything I could do about this so I just tried to not itch as much.
