During this event I learned about the impact social media has. Social media has negative effects on college students. Such as anxiety, peer pressure and low self esteem, Social media also affects mental and physical health. I feel like this information was important to learn because a lot of people use social media. The event also gave our help resources such as the Wellness and Mental Health Center(Bladen hall Room 132).
The Impact of Social Media and Perfectionism on College Students (Mental Health - SSP Mini Session #3) [Virtual]
I learned about how social media fosters unrealistic standards of perfection, often leading to anxiety, self-comparison, and low self-esteem. The discussion covered the role of curated content, filters, and algorithms in shaping perceptions of beauty, success, and happiness. We also explored strategies to maintain a healthy relationship with social media, such as limiting screen time, following accounts that promote authenticity, and practicing self-compassion.
I learned about how peoples perception of themself can change because of social media and their ideas of perfectionism. People tend to be afraid of failing or being perceived as a failure. We were then taught to recognize perfectionism behaviors such as procrastination, self-criticism, avoiding challenges, and excessively redoing or checking work. After learning about behaviors about perfectionism, we were then shown how to break the perfectionism illusion. We were told to practice self-compassion, embrace things being "good enough," adopt a growth mindset, and to always celebrate progress. We were shown ways to develop a better relationship with social media, such as having a screen limit, seeking positive content, and practicing mindfulness.
After attending this session, I feel more confident in my ability to set healthy boundaries around social media. I learned practical strategies to manage my screen time and be more intentional with how I use different platforms. Moving forward, I plan to apply these tools to create a healthier balance between my online and offline life.
As the presentation went on, I learned that many people fail their academics due to social media and its expectations. This presentation has taught me to be more lenient on myself and learn to just chill when something doesn't go the way I expected. I will also take a break from my phone to relieve some of the stress that social brings to my life.
The meeting was very helpful and made me think about being more patient with myself.
I really appreciate being able to partake in the meeting, I feel more confident in the way I perceive social media and feeling connected with other people who can relate to the same issues.
This scholarship session was helpful to me because I didn’t realize how much social media impact my life
