Open opportunities at Bread for the City, DC

When I volunteered at Bread for the City in DC I helped pack food and organize items in the food pantry. My job was to help get food ready to be distributed to people in the community. While I was doing this I realized that even simple tasks can make a difference because the food we packed would help people get something they need every day.
This experience connects to biology because food provides the nutrients our bodies need to survive and function properly. In class we learn that nutrients like carbohydrates proteins fats vitamins and minerals help our bodies produce energy grow and stay healthy. The food I helped pack could provide people with some of these nutrients. Without enough food the body can become weak and have trouble functioning normally.
I also realized that not everyone has the same access to healthy food. This can affect a person's health and make it harder for their body to get the nutrients it needs. Volunteering helped me understand that biology is not just about learning how the body works in a classroom. It also connects to real situations that affect people's everyday lives. Overall this experience showed me that helping provide food can support people's health and well being. It helped me see how something as simple as packing food can connect to what we learn in biology.
