I had tons of fun doing this! Everyone was super enthusiastic.
I helped set up Courage's new facility. We organized a shed, cleaned an office, and helped make the holding pens safer for the horses. We also dewormed three of the horses.
We learned about personality traits in horses, or horsenalitites. We also learned about seven activities to play with horses. The activities are part of Parelli natural horsemanship. We watched the speaker demonstrate the seven activities on a horse.
We went to Horses for Healing. We learned what it would be like to have different physical disabilities and groomed horses with these disabilities. We learned how to get someone on a horse using a ramp. We also played a game that simulated having a mental disability.
We learned how to halter, groom, and put a saddle on a horse. We pretended to be clients and rode on the horses with sidewalks. The rider would do simple exercises on the horse, like raising their hands in the air.
We split into two groups and created an exercise for the other group to complete that was related to stress. Both groups used the balls to symbolize different priorities and had the group lead one of the horses in an obstacle course. Then all together, we tried to get one of the horses to go over a pole. After every activity, we would stop and discuss our feelings and thoughts about the activity
We went to Hoofin It and learned about the differences between occupational therapy, physical therapy, and therapeutic riding. Several students pretended to be clients and tried out the techniques Sach and Codi Oliver use.
We went to CCC and learned about using psychology with horses. Some of us got to pretend to be families or couples with problems and practiced therapy techniques that Kim Copps and J. Cline use.
We learned about how to work with clients while they are on a horse. We then practiced being side walkers with other students riding on the horse pretending to be clients.
