The volunteers were split into a waste clean-up team and a gardening team. I joined the latter, and spent most of my shift cutting down trees in Memphis Rox's community garden to make room for expansion. I found the volunteering to be an engaging at-your-own-pace experience; the energetic could lop down brush and tree limbs, while those resting could drag the wood to a pile.
While a park ranger did arrive to direct us, an authority figure that was needed to begin volunteer work was not present, even after half an hour. As such, there was no volunteering; we were told to go home. However, I still recieved hours, which I appreciate.
Staff were helpful as always in getting volunteers set up. This is the first "preview night" shift I've done, and it doesn't have nearly as much activity as a normal night. That could be someone else's preferred volunteer experience, but I'll try to stick to higher-traffic shifts in the future.
Thank you so much for volunteering with us Wyatt. Your work was well appreciated. Volunteers like you make Starry Nights a success. We look forward to having you back to volunteer with us soon.
