Impacts
During my volunteer experience, I had the opportunity to engage in various aspects of the Advocacy Office's work at Newhouse. During this time, I actively contributed to the cleanliness and maintenance of the domestic violence shelter, ensuring it remained a safe and welcoming environment for survivors and their families. While performing these tasks, I also gained invaluable insights into the realities of working directly with clients and understanding the importance of creating a secure space for their healing journey. Additionally, I had the privilege of answering the hotline, allowing me to experience firsthand the critical role that effective communication plays in providing immediate support to individuals in crisis. This experience highlighted the multifaceted responsibilities of advocacy work and deepened my appreciation for the profound impact it has on the lives of survivors.
Today I worked in the front lobby at the Children's Safety Center. Due to Covid-19, we have to constantly whip down all the furniture, toys, and books the kids and families sit at while waiting to be taken back. For the kids, we have a little playroom that is jungle-themed with tons of toys to keep their minds clear. Since it's been closed for so long, I went in whipping all the dust off to get ready to hopefully open up soon. While I was doing this the workers at the Children's Safety Center were doing an interview explaining what their duties are as an organization. It was cool seeing all the behind the sense! After the interview was done, I put more stuffed animals in the front of the lobby. We do this so when the children are done with their appointment, they can take home a stuffed animal home that reminders them how special of a place CSC is and how they feel safe and warm-hearted. To end my day I just did some organizing in the closets in the back!
We did a philanthropy event called Coffee with CAPS where we had the AOII chefs make waffles, eggs, fruit, sausage and iced coffee. If people bought a ticket they were about to come by in their cars while some of us girls walked to their cars to give them their food. This was such a great experience and for a good cause!!
