For this week's session we focused on teaching the kids all about self esteem. Once we explained the concept of self esteem to them we started doing some activities that were meant to boost their self esteem and the self esteem of others in the class. We started by going around the room and giving each one of ourselves a compliment. After we paid ourselves a compliment we made each of them compliment one of their classmates. Once we did that, they all agreed that hearing someone else say something nice to them was a good experience. I really enjoyed this experience because it was rewarding to see all these kids be nice to each other.
We did have a bit of a challenge when it came to complimenting others. Some of these kids are in different classes so they do not know each other that well and did not know what to say to one another. Eventually, we let them know that it is okay to say nice things about how a person looks, for example "I like your hair" or "I like your outfit".
My key takeaway from this day was to be more mindful of what I say to others. I saw how easy it was to boost these kids self esteems via compliments, so I can assume it would be just as easy to lower their self esteems.
