This event was the day we have been preparing for in my intro to social work class. We had done the ordering of food, the stocking of food, the presentation of the food and lastly the distribution of the food. This event was partnered with the wellness center because we are aware of economic and housing issues in our community. This was our way to help kids get their hands on something to eat. All they had to do was fill out a form to make sure they were from the campus and do a quick survey. We were able to give out 100 bags and we felt that these students were grateful.

This meeting was about plans for the future. It revolved around the importance of career paths and job interviews. We went over factors that can make interviews go smoothly and best way possible. It is important to know your career paths environment so you have an idea on how to show up to your job interview. One thing we went over was the dress code. The way we dress always makes a first impression. Another factor we learned about was the resume. Lastly we also spoke about the way of communication. You want to speak as if you were speaking to someone with respect.

This event was for alcohol awareness where my social work class helped the wellness center to raise awareness of the dangers of alcohol. We set up drunk glasses and tape on the floor then found volunteers to see how it was to be under the influence. This was also supported with brochures and posters about alcohol and its effects.

    Scholarship Night #4: Transfer Talks

It was a very informative meeting towards my next step in my academic career. It covered a lot of topics such as finance, advising and majors. I learned that I should be already ahead in the transfers and I’ve done so. I’m planning to use this info to work on the financial part to my next move.

We spoke about grief and its stages. Sometimes we see grief as loss of someone but sometimes it’s not even physical. One we touched on was memories and friendships. Sometimes we lose connections to people and aren’t as close to people as we are. Sometimes we lose different aspects of ourselves due to loss resulting in the stages of grief. These stages are denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. One thing I learned is that these stages aren’t always in order.

This DMSI meeting had a topic that I feel is important in the present. The skill of active listening. Sometimes listening to some one is enough to change their feelings. We learned that it is good to listen without interruption. It also helps with the emotional baggage of a person which is another topic we spoke of. Sometimes people carry their issues and and emotions and just need to let it out. All they expect is for someone to listen.

We learned about registration for summer and fall. It is important to think ahead and not wait until the last minute to apply for classes. This will then make you have issues in your schedules. An example could be how you would have to take a 6pm class when you have to work those days. We also touched the topic of planning success for the rest of the semester. We know that hot weather is coming in and you want to go out and enjoy it. However it is important to remember you still have classes and need to be attentive. The closer to summer we get, the closer to finals as well.

Scholarship Night #3: Strengths for College Students

I liked this very energized meeting. A lot of participation, encouragement and learning. It’s very important to live your life with empowerment. You should use your skills to reach your goal but also improve on skills you lack.

    Healthy Relationships Wellness Center

This meeting opened up more tips and definitions into relationships. I learned about the relationship continuum. This involved the three categories of healthy, un healthy and abusive. It is important to have communication, trust and personal times in a relationships. A person needs to be attentive, respective of family and avoid blaming. We don’t want to hold grudges and be unfaithful.

This meeting in this weeks DMSI workshop was about self reflection. This is to look inward in one’s self to figure out negatives and positives. Sometimes we are moving too quick to realize we are commuting the same errors every time a problem arises. This is why we should look inwards and try to find ways to maintain a positive momentum.
