    Honors College Path Program 2023-2024

I attended Honors Recess: Mediterranean Summer. I unfortunately was only at stop by for a very short time but I enjoyed every minute I was there.

I participated in Path Interview Weekend by speaking with prospective Path students, helping them feel welcomed, and escorting them to and from their interviews throughout the day. I helped create a comfortable and encouraging environment by answering general questions, engaging with students while they waited, and making sure they felt supported during the interview process. I also helped keep the day organized by guiding students to the correct locations, helping them stay on schedule, and serving as a friendly point of contact throughout the event.

Volunteering as a judge for the Honors College Symposium was a unique and inspiring experience. I had the opportunity to evaluate student innovation projects, many of which tackled real-world challenges with creative and research-driven solutions. As a judge, I listened to presentations, asked questions, and provided constructive feedback—all while learning about the impressive work my peers were doing across disciplines.

What made the experience especially meaningful was seeing the passion and dedication behind each project. Many students had spent months refining their ideas, and it was clear how much effort had gone into their research and design. I felt honored to be part of a process that not only celebrated academic excellence but also encouraged forward-thinking, problem-solving, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Serving in this role also helped me sharpen my own critical thinking and communication skills, as I had to fairly assess a wide range of topics while offering supportive and thoughtful insights.

Being a part of PATH Interview Weekend was one of the most meaningful volunteer experiences I’ve had. I was responsible for walking prospective students to their interview rooms and sitting with them beforehand to help ease any nerves. This role gave me the chance to offer support, answer questions, and share my own journey in the PATH Program.

It was incredibly rewarding to be a calm and encouraging presence for students who were clearly eager—but understandably anxious—about the opportunity. I remembered how I felt during my own interview, so I made it a point to create a warm, welcoming atmosphere for each person I spoke with. Many opened up about their hopes, challenges, and what drew them to the program. These conversations reminded me why PATH matters and how much of an impact it can have on someone’s college experience. Being able to pay that forward, even in small ways, was a powerful moment of reflection and connection.

Volunteering at the PATH Program game night was a truly enjoyable and meaningful experience. What made the night especially wonderful was seeing how excited and curious the prospective students were about the PATH Program. Many asked thoughtful questions and shared their hopes for their college journey, which reminded me of my own introduction to the program. Being able to share my experience and help them feel supported and seen was incredibly fulfilling. The evening was not just fun—it was a powerful reminder of how community-centered programs like PATH make a difference from the very start.

Attending Honors Recess for Women’s History Month was a meaningful and enriching experience. The event created a space for students to reflect on the contributions, challenges, and achievements of women throughout history and in contemporary society. It was a great opportunity to engage in thoughtful conversation with peers and faculty, while also learning about influential women who have shaped fields ranging from science and politics to art and social justice.

Volunteering with the MATHCOUNTS competition at the University of Arkansas was an incredibly rewarding experience. The event brought together bright and enthusiastic middle school students from across the region to challenge themselves in math through individual and team-based competitions. As a volunteer, I had the opportunity to help with event setup, registration, and proctoring exams, which gave me a behind-the-scenes look at how such a large academic competition is organized.

What stood out the most was the energy and excitement from the students. Watching them collaborate on tough problems, encourage each other, and celebrate their successes reminded me of the joy of learning and the importance of academic community. It was inspiring to see so many young students passionate about math, and I was proud to be part of an event that fosters that enthusiasm.

Overall, the experience deepened my appreciation for STEM outreach and showed me how impactful volunteering can be in creating meaningful educational opportunities. It also reinforced my own love for math and my interest in supporting future generations of learners. Would you like this turned into a paragraph for a resume, scholarship essay, or cover letter?

As a member of the UREC Hiring Committee, I had the opportunity to attend a talk focused on inclusion in the application review process. The session emphasized the importance of recognizing implicit bias, promoting equity, and ensuring that every applicant is evaluated fairly based on their qualifications and potential. It was both eye-opening and practical, providing tools and frameworks for making more inclusive hiring decisions.

What I appreciated most was how the discussion encouraged us to think critically about the language we use in evaluations, the assumptions we might unconsciously make, and the value of diverse experiences in building a stronger team. This talk deepened my understanding of what inclusive hiring really looks like in action and reinforced my commitment to creating a more welcoming and equitable environment for all candidates. It was a powerful reminder that even small adjustments in the review process can make a big difference in broadening opportunity and representation.

I attended a distinguished lecture where a doctor who served on the front lines in Gaza during June 2024 shared his experiences. His stories were both eye-opening and deeply moving, offering a firsthand account of the challenges faced by medical professionals in conflict zones. Hearing about his work under such intense conditions highlighted the resilience and humanity required to provide care amidst chaos.

The lecture also made me reflect on the importance of global health and humanitarian efforts in areas of crisis. The doctor's insights not only shed light on the medical and ethical dilemmas he encountered but also emphasized the urgent need for compassion and support in addressing the suffering of those caught in conflict. It was an inspiring and humbling experience that left me with a deeper appreciation for the sacrifices made by individuals dedicated to saving lives in the most trying circumstances.
