I wasn't able to upload the event name but it was the First-Generation College Celebration – Panel Discussion. TRIO reached out to students who wanted to be on the panel discussion and I was able to be one of them. This event was intriguing because not only did I get to share my side of being first generation, but I got to hear from a fellow student as well as faculty. We also got to see some stories of students during the YouTube videos reflected. Overall, I liked this event as it was a motivation for first-generation students to continue going and to take their time as their path is their own.
This event was the research peer review workshop for the student research club. This event was to get peer review on any research papers that you may be working on. In my group, I got to review someone who was researching something dealing with air pollution and disease, in addition to someone who was taking the same class as me and working on the research proposal. I was also able to get feedback on one of my internship personal essays as well. This was helpful because it got me started on my research proposal paper and the direction to head it in as well as the confidence to turn in my internship application.
This experience was an interesting one. I think it was an important topic to talk about too since I don't believe I've seen an event focused around it. I think it was beneficial to talk about healthy masculinity and relationships because I believe they go hand in hand. Overall, I think this event went well and that I learned a lot of new things from the presenters.
This was the Poster Presentation/Development Workshop for the Student Research Club. I was able to share my poster presentation for the internship I did this summer at the NIH and receive feedback on what I could've improved. I was also able to listen to tips for making the poster and the requirements for what should be added. This was incredibly helpful as I plan on being more involved with research once I transfer so it is good to get feedback and advice.
I was part of the presenters for this meeting. I was able to talk about my internship and what I did over the summer. It was very good to share with everybody and learn a bit more about the NIH through Dr. Hurle.
This experience was the W.O.W Community Service "Packing Social Party". We packed feminine hygiene products, bras, as well as inspirational messages into bags. We also got to hear from the speaker Dr. Katherine who gave a powerful talk about her past, why she created this organization, in addition to talk about the human body. It was a very interactive and inspirational event.
I was able to connect with Dr. Hurle from the NIH and listen to her presentation about NIH internships. We also got to talk a little bit about the event I will be presenting with her later in November.
This was a good event reflecting on credit and its importance. I have had a few experiences with learning about it but I was always left with questions and it was a while ago. I opened a credit card not too long ago and I found this workshop to be useful in navigating what it is and how to keep my credit score where it should be. I wasn't left with many questions and found the event moderators to be great speakers and engagers.
This event was The State of Girls in STEM: A Conversation to Plan Action. I was asked by Professor Ring as well as a couple of other students if we were interested in participating in this event as a panelist. I was able to go and I learned a couple of things. This event was focused on how to help girls in STEM succeed and stay in that career. I was able to speak with two other girls about our experience in STEM and answer questions. I was also able to stay for the day and learn how corporations, teachers, and funders all have different plans to help girls in STEM. They made different plans of action on how to take charge and support the whole girl. It was inspiring knowing that a lot of people were focused on making sure that we succeeded. Not only was I able to attend this event, but PGCC also reached out to cover a short story that came out in the December Owl Brief Newsletter.
