I served in Philadelphia under the initiatives of youth empowerment and community development Specifically, my time was dedicated to volunteering and collaborating in different schools, spanning from elementary to high school levels. A significant highlight was my involvement at Kipp, where I assisted and evaluated students' projects for the invention convention. Witnessing the enthusiasm of young black students for science and experimentation was particularly fulfilling for me as a STEM major. Furthermore, I engaged in discussions with educators about organizing the STEAM program, which integrates art into the traditional STEM disciplines. I also had the opportunity to lead a STEAM activity with the children, constructing various structures using toothpicks and gumdrops. At Mothers in Charge, a nonprofit aiding families affected by violence, I participated in conversations about their ARTivism program, which employs art to help troubled youth unpack and understand their trauma. We delved into topics such as the brain structures involved in emotions and the mechanisms of reaction during our sessions. Additionally, I volunteered at a food distribution program, where we packaged food for the local community. Through this experience, we explored the urban implications of food insecurity and the role of factors like infrastructure. Overall, my involvement in the Alternative Spring Break program was deeply impactful and interconnected with various aspects of biology.
