For a part of my service hours, I volunteered at the Capital Area Food Bank. Working at the food bank involves sorting and distributing different types of food items. Understanding the nutritional content of the various foods, such as proteins and carbohydrates, is essential. This understanding ties directly into biology because it involves having the knowledge of how nutrients impact human health and biology. Food banks play a vital role in addressing the issue of food insecurity, which is linked to various health issues. By providing nutritious food to those in need, food banks contribute to public health initiatives aimed at reducing malnutrition and other related diseases. Biology is involved with public health by studying how factors like diet and access to nutritious food impact health outcomes.
While I was volunteering, Rich, the person that led my volunteer group, explained to us the different processes that we would be involved in. First we unboxed all the foods in order to sort them to make it easier for everyone to place them into the boxes that were getting shipped to the people in need. After that, I was placed at a station in front of the conveyor belt in order to place one group of food into the box. The person next to me then placed the next group of food into the box. We did this until we filled hundreds and hundreds of boxes.
