DC Science Fair Judge
DC Science Fair Judge

I had the opportunity to be a judge in the "DC Secondary STEM Fair and Elementary STEM Exhibition" where I got to witness students from all eight wards to showcase their ideas, talents, and innovation within the Behavioral & Social category. Each project delved into different aspects of behavioral and social sciences, ranging from exploring the obesity paradox to investigating the effects of a device-free bedtime routine on teen sleep. It was fascinating to see how these students applied scientific principles to real-world issues, demonstrating a depth of understanding of the concepts.
As I reflect on this experience, I am reminded of the interconnectedness between community service and the study of biology. The projects that I had the pleasure of judging demonstrated how biology influences multiple areas of our everyday life. For instance, tenth grader Raman Bakshi's project on the obesity paradox not only explored the physiological implications of body mass index but also touched on pressing societal issues such as Alzheimer's disease. By examining the relationship between obesity and cognitive health, Raman highlighted an extensive connection between biology, behavior, and social factors.
Similarly, eleventh grader Mandi Nguyen's study on the effects of a device-free bedtime routine on teen sleep addressed how circadian rhythms and hormonal regulation are biological influences on sleep patterns and behaviors. Mandi's research not only highlighted the importance of understanding these biological mechanisms but also highlighted the impact of societal trends, such as excessive screen time, on adolescent health.
My participation in the STEM fair helped me to better understand how diverse biology is. By engaging with students and their projects, I was reminded that biology is not confined to textbooks and lectures but is a dynamic field that intersects with every aspect of our lives.
