While doing volunteer work at Capital Area Food Bank and thinking of this reflection, I immediately began thinking about Carbohydrates, which I learned about more in lecture this semester. Carbohydrates are one of the three main nutrients found in foods and drinks. The body breaks down carbohydrates into glucose and glucose is the main source of energy for the body’s cells, tissues, and organs. Carbohydrates regulate blood sugar and without them the body’s blood sugar can drop too low and that causes lethargy and irritation. They also help fuel the brain, kidneys, heart, muscles, and central nervous system. While I was packaging foods and transferring them into boxes, I thought of how I was handing people carbohydrates and how it would give them the energy to go do whatever they planned to do with their day. I also thought about how because of carbohydrates I had the energy to help build boxes and package food for those in need. I learned about carbohydrates in lecture and was able to apply it to my daily thinking of life. It was an amazing experience to volunteer at Capital Area Food bank, while also relating it to something that I am studying.
