I volunteered at the food bank of CENC at Wilmington. At my session, we had worked unpacking sweet potatoes that were brought in on pallets. The other 20 volunteers and I, worked on this by putting the potatoes into string sort of bags, filling them up with 10 pounds of potatoes each, and then putting theme into a large box in which the potatoes would get sent to different soup kitchens, food pantries, etc. I had worked mainly by myself, talking to the people next to me. I would also grab and refill our bags whenever we were running low.
We had a problem with the scale not working correctly, so we had tried it ourselves trying to fix it. Our scale just seemed to be giving us off numbers. We brought up the issue to the director of the session, and she had told us to just sort of feel it out, it didn't have to be exactly 10lbs, and to stick within a margin of error.
Although it seemed like everyone was in their own little bubble while packing, it was nice to know that we were still a part of a larger team. I helped another volunteer when they had dropped their box of potatoes, or when looking at the other boxes still needed to be unpacked, sort of going down rapidly as everyone was contributing, was actually pretty awesome.
This connects to my goals and values, as someone who aspires to be open minded, and aware of my community/ world around me, it is nice to not only acknowledge that there are people and communities who greatly benefit from these services, and also being apart of it makes me feel like i am playing a larger role of service to my community, rather than focusing on my own specific life and goals.
I think that the way we were able to complete our work, actually a little ahead of time, really showed that even if it feels like directly we werent working together, that we were indeed part of a larger team, and that sort of describes successful leadership.
Setting out a clear goal, and getting people to all do their part in getting it done, was nice to see in practice, and a good example of leadership.
Overall i had a great experience during my service, and plan on coming back this same week to do some more with my fraternity brothers.
