I was able to attend the Thursday morning time with Rise Up Community Farm and had an amazing time. Upon arriving I met with AnnaGrace, the supervisor for all of us volunteers. She showed me the task list we had for the day, pointed out different spots around the farm, gave a little back story on the non-profit and explained how it provided food to the House of Mercy Food Pantry.
During our shift, the other volunteers and myself were able to weed out a huge section of one of the gardens and prepare individual rows for planting of different crops. This included adding minerals based on the year's soil testing, top coating with compost, and then digging holes for the individual seedlings.
The other volunteers, composing of other UNCW students and locals from the community, were all very nice and loved engaging in conversation making the entire experience wonderful.
Even if you have never gardened before or are an experienced gardener I highly recommend taking the opportunity to volunteer with Rise Up Community Farm you might have find you have a green thumb!
