During my volunteer experience at the recycling center, I was able to help with several hands-on tasks that gave me a deeper understanding of the process as a whole. I began by sorting paper materials and feeding them into a large compression machine, which crushed them into small squares for later recycling. After finishing all the paper that was available, I moved on to assist in another area of the center. This area was where they sorted all the plastics, aluminum, paper, and numerous of other random items that would be thrown away on campus. Throughout my experience here, I have gained a deep respect for the people who do this all day, every day, because even though I was only there for two hours, I was exhausted by the end. I also learned to always empty cups and other items before throwing them away, as someone on the other end will have to touch them and get their hands dirty in that mysterious liquid. I am very grateful for the opportunity to help here, as it taught me valuable lessons. The people there are very nice, genuinely care about their jobs, and appreciate having volunteers to assist them.
