Today I returned to volunteer here in order to garden. Our efforts consisted of weeding plants like fig trees and many other things growing in the garden. As it is nearing winter, they are shutting down the garden. We also did not harvest food because food doesn't get picked up on Fridays. I enjoyed the opportunity to fix up the garden, as I have previously enjoyed gardening. It was also a good time to connect with others gardening, and it was very calming. I am proud that I got to help develop the community garden and I will be back later. This event closely relates to the idea of photosynthesis and cellular respiration, as these plants produce oxygen and energy. I was specifically dealing with fig trees, and these plants also give energy and vitamins to herbivores all around them.

This experience was an easy process and very fulfilling. I had originally signed up to garden, however it was cancelled due to the gardener being unable to show. They rescheduled me the same day and around the same timeslot which was extremely helpful. They let us sign the volunteering waiver and they talked a bit, then we got right to work. The cans were already sorted so all we had to do was package them as directed. We also created boxes for the people who would package food next. I think it was a great way to be able to easily distribute food to those who need it and for those who create meal packages later. It is also a way for people to get nonperishable foods in a quick manner because even today, it is hard to afford and find food, especially in this economy. This relates to biology because each of the cans contains a carbohydrate, a protein, or a lipid. These are necessary for us to live and thrive as organisms and are needed for energy.
