Capitol Area Food Bank

I once again had a blast volunteering at the Capital Area Food Bank! This time I packed a variety of food to be distributed including essentials like pasta and rice, beverage mixes, and baking goods. In addition to preparing and organizing food in boxes, I also helped load them onto palettes to be sent out, ready to be sent to those in need.

The variety of foods we pack is essential for supporting balanced nutrition, especially for people who may not have consistent access to fresh produce or diverse food options. A varied diet isn’t just about meeting calorie needs—it’s also biologically important for health. Different foods offer unique nutrients, vitamins, and minerals that our bodies require to function properly. For example, one of the foods I packed was whole grain flour which can provide fiber for digestion. Another example of what I packed was Greek yogurt which contains proteins that can support muscle and tissue repair.

By distributing a range of foods, food banks play an important role in supporting the health of the community.

Once again, I had a wonderful time volunteering at the Captial Area Food Bank! This time when I volunteered instead of packing food, we focused on preparing the supplies used for the next shift due to a shortage of food items. I helped set up bags and boxes, organized and moved them onto pallets, and reinforced grocery bags to make sure they’d be sturdy and ready to go. Toward the end of the shift, I also helped sweep and clean to maintain a safe and organized workspace.

This experience showed how essential food security is to support basic biological functions and overall health. When people can access nutritious food, it can support their bodies' cellular functions and energy production. For example, eating carbohydrates can provide immediate energy for the body and you can get vitamins and minerals from fruits and vegetables which can support bone density and brain health.

Today, I feel that our work can make a real impact on community health, by helping to ensure that individuals can receive the nutrients essential for their body’s resilience and daily function.

After such a great first experience at the Capital Area Food Bank, I was excited to return for another shift. This time, I helped double-bag groceries to make them sturdy for distribution, then packed food items into bags and boxes. By the end of our shift, we had assembled around 930 boxes—surpassing our previous record! It was incredibly rewarding to know that each box would provide essential nutrients for people in need.

Biologically, the work we did has a direct impact on health at the cellular level. We supplied bags and boxes with healthy foods that contained complex molecules that contribute to overall health. For instance, I helped pack grits which contain carbohydrates to provide energy and fiber that can help maintain steady blood sugar levels. Consistent access to nutritious food supports the body’s energy production, immune strength, and tissue repair. For people who are facing food insecurity, this access can reduce the risk of malnutrition-related issues, such as anemia, weakened immunity, and cognitive decline, which are more common when nutrient intake is insufficient.

Volunteering at the food bank showed me firsthand how access to basic nutritional resources makes a critical difference in supporting biological health, and I’m looking forward to contributing again soon!

I had a wonderful time at the Capital Food Bank. I packed canned food in boxes that would be shipped to a senior citizen's home. From this experience, I learned that older adults often face challenges like limited food and mobility which make receiving nutrients very difficult. We were a small group, but we were able to pack 398 boxes of food to donate! This was a great opportunity to contribute to someone's well-being and health by supplying them with good vitamins and nutrients.

Additionally, this experience can relate to what I learned in biology by making me think about how aging can impact the body on a cellular level. I realized that as people age, their cells need more support to function well, especially regarding antioxidants, protein, and minerals for bone strength. Knowing that I was able to provide foods that could help protect against cell damage or support muscle and bone health gave me a real sense of connection to the biology behind our bodies—and the ways we can actively support one another’s health.
