Assessment of AED Resources on Howard University's Campus

At Howard University, activities such as map making, creating rescue guides, and locating Automated External Defibrillator (AED) machines intersect with the field of biology in multiple ways. For example, to utilize AEDs correctly, individuals must possess a basic understanding of cardiac anatomy, function, and the causes of cardiac arrest. Cardiac arrest, a condition where the heart loses function, constitutes the primary use case for an AED. Comprehension of heart-related issues is essential in recognizing the significance of these life-saving devices. Also, CPR awareness, a component of biology classes, proves beneficial during emergencies. Students who learn how to perform CPR, aligns with their biological knowledge of the heart and circulatory system. By teaching CPR, biology classes encourage students to respond effectively in critical situations. Lastly, biology-led projects play a key role in increasing awareness and improving AED accessibility on campus. Students take the advantage to map AED locations, creating rescue guides. These efforts contribute to emergency preparedness and potentially impact lives. As students, we recognize the importance of public health and safety. By applying our biology knowledge, we actively contribute to campus well-being.

Howard University Hospital

The event I attended being the orientation required to volunteer at the Howard University hospital was very informative and also broke down the things necessary for a successful application. Training was provided onsite of the Hospital and an application and training packet was received upon arrival. I appreciate the women who spoke and took their time to walk through necessary information for the job and I look forward to completing my application.
