Today, 10/28/25, I volunteered at Martha's Table. The goal of this opportunity was to provide good-quality produce to communities who otherwise wouldn't have proper access. At J.C. Nalle Elementary school we provided a variety of produce for parents or kids to choose from as they were being picked up from school, as well as two activity tables. This relates back to Biology 101 because by giving out fresh produce, people are getting the vitamins, minerals, and nutrients that essential for overall health.

I assisted Martha’s Table, during their Joyful Market. I unpacked food and created bags for the families and students that came to the market. After completing the market, I assisted in the take down process and pack up.

I volunteered at Martha’s Table, helping to pack and distribute fresh fruits to community members. Through this experience, I contributed to supporting local families’ access to healthy food. It was rewarding to see how small acts of service can make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.

It felt good to help others and see how small efforts can make a big difference. I enjoyed being part of something that supports the community.

I volunteered with Joyful Food Markets with the help of Martha’s Table, at the Nalle Elementary school to help give back to the community. I helped assist other volunteers to help keep the pop up market stacked and prepared to help locals shop for the groceries while maintaining and welcoming and positive atmosphere!

Today, 10/26/25, I volunteered at Martha's Table. The goal of this opportunity was to provide hot meals and to go dinners to members of the community. At two different locations, I helped set up and distribute meals to at least 100 people. I was nervous since it was just me and one other volunteer, but we worked well together. This relates back to Biology 101 from when we learned how carbohydrates and lipids are essential to the human body. Giving out those meals means providing people with the nutrients necessary for them.

I volunteered at Martha’s Table in Washington, DC, where I helped bag groceries and distribute fresh produce to over 700 people. It was a rewarding experience that showed me how biological concepts apply to real-life community work. I learned that the produce is ordered the same day to reduce waste and ensure everyone receives fresh food. Spoiled fruits and vegetables are sent to a compost facility, allowing nutrients to return to the soil and support plant growth, an example of the nutrient and energy cycles we discussed in class.
This experience helped me connect what we’ve learned in Biology 101 to practical applications. For example, understanding carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins helped me appreciate how these nutrients are essential for human metabolism and energy production. I also saw how cellular respiration and photosynthesis are not just textbook processes, they’re part of the same cycle that sustains all living organisms. The composted materials feed plants, which perform photosynthesis to produce food energy for humans, completing the biological cycle of life.
Through this service, I realized how biology shapes everyday experiences like eating, farming, and health. It deepened my respect for how communities, like Martha’s Table, use sustainable and science-informed practices to fight hunger while caring for the environment.

Over the course of the past two weeks, I volunteered at Martha's Table, prepping and providing fresh produce and other grocery items. Expanding upon my experience at Martha's Table, the produce distributed has much connection to the material in Bio 101, as the produce such as the eggplant, squash, apples, and many more available to the customers underwent a process called photosynthesis, essentially becoming a product of energy. My experience at Martha's Table is one that I've greatly enjoyed, and becoming a part of a process which allows for everyone to have access to proper nutrients reminded me of the importance of community. Outside of the program itself, the hospitality of the workers, other volunteers, and the customers coming to receive brought me joy. In relation to Bio 101, this experience reminded me of the energy exchange from autotrophs to heterotrophs, as well as the amount of energy that is consistently exchanged over time.

I had my first volunteer experience at Martha’s Table Market on the 21st of October, 2025 and it was amazing. I was able to see firsthand how a choice-based food assistance system empowers individuals and families facing food insecurity so that they could choose the foods that best fit their needs and preferences.
I, along with 3 other volunteers helped sort and organize fresh vegetables, fruits and packaged goods that provide the essential macromolecules I have studied. I also had the opportunity to interact with and distribute food to members of the community. This experience solidified that access to food and nutrients is not just a biological concept but a daily necessity for survival and health.
Overall, volunteering strengthened my understanding of biology while also showing me the impact of compassion, service and equitable food access in my local DC community.

This was my second time volunteering at Martha’s Table in Washington, D.C., and it was once again a great experience that deepened my understanding of how food pantries take care of the community. Today I pretty much did the same this, helping distribute fresh produce and pantry items to local residents. This experience also reminded me that service isn't always easy but the work that you do helps people way more than you could know. This experience reinforced my commitment to serving my communities no matter how big or small and to continue to put empathy first on my journey to get these and a community-focused mindset. I am excited volunteer at Martha's Table again later this week!
